چکیده

This paper details a pilot study done to assess the effectiveness of a tactile rendering strategy. The rendering strategy addresses the tactile receptors in the skin via stimuli consisting of superimposed sine waves. To assess the validity of this strategy, subjects were presented with sets of four virtual textiles and asked to rate them in terms of similarity to a real textile. The results showed that 38.1±3.1% of textiles were accurately identified as the most similar, with systematic error patterns in the identification of textiles. We conclude that the virtual textiles are discriminable to test subjects, with 4.54±0.13 of the subjects consistently choosing the same textile, but in many cases none of the virtual textiles is a good match to the real textiles.

Multi-Modal Learning for Dynamic Tactile Sensing

Dynamic tactile sensing allows humans to infer surface and material properties from the vibrations caused by the sliding motion between the skin and an object [1]. For example, one can easily determine the roughness of a surface by sliding one’s finger tip over the surface [2]. This sensory modality is also fundamental for tool usage, as it detects the vibrations resulting from the tool making ...

Tactile speed scaling: contributions of time and space.

A major challenge for the brain is to extract precise information about the attributes of tactile stimuli from signals that co-vary with multiple parameters, e.g., speed and texture in the case of scanning movements. We determined the ability of humans to estimate the tangential speed of surfaces moved under the stationary fingertip and the extent to which the physical characteristics of the su...

Parametric investigation of the mechanics of soft-body contact with parallel-ridge textured surfaces to understand tactile friction

Tactile friction which occurs between the surfaces of hand-operated products and the user as well as the user’s perception of surface characteristics are both very important considerations for the function of engineering products. While the use of surface texture is known to greatly influence these properties, the effect of the governing textural parameters on the friction mechanisms between a ...
